Tower Bridge is in London, England, over the River Thames. It is a combined bascule and suspension bridge. It is close to the Tower of London therefore its name is refered as Tower Bridge. The bridge is an iconic symbol of London.
It consists of two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways which are designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. Its present colour dates from 1977 when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a chocolate brown colour.[1]

Tower Bridge is sometimes mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is actually the next bridge upstream. It is said that in 1968, Robert McCulloch, the purchaser of the old London Bridge that was later shipped to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, believed that he was in fact buying Tower Bridge. This was denied by McCulloch himself and has been debunked by Ivan Luckin, the seller of the bridge.

The nearest London Underground station is Tower Hill on the Circle and District Lines, and the nearest Docklands Light Railway station is Tower Gateway.

The construction of the bridge started in 1886 and took eight years. The five major contractors were (1) Sir John Jackson (foundations), (2) Baron Armstrong (hydraulics), (3) William Webster, (4) Sir H.H. Bartlett, and (5) Sir William Arrol & Co. 432 construction employed workers contributed in it’s construction. E W Crutwell was the resident engineer for the construction.

The bridge is owned by the Detroit International Bridge Co., which is controlled by Grosse Pointe businessman Manuel “Matty” Moroun. The total bridge length is 7,500 feet (2,286 m). The Construction of the bridge began in 1927 and was completed in 1929. A 2004 Border Transportation Partnership study showed that 150,000 jobs in the region and US$13 billion in annual production depend on the Windsor-Detroit international border crossing. The four-lane bridge carries more than 10,000 commercial vehicles on a typical weekday. It is the busiest international border crossing in North America in terms of trade volume: more than 25 percent of all merchandise trade between the United States and Canada crosses the bridge.

The bridge has been featured in the films like 8 Mile, Crossing the Bridge, Grosse Pointe Blank, Sicko and Bowling for Columbine and also featured in the novel Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. The bridge is the real beauty of the architectural art of the architect Company; the McClintic-Marshall of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The complex consists of two major bridges that link Zhenjiang on the south bank of the river and Yangzhou on the north. The bridge is part of the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway.

The south bridge is a suspension bridge with a main span of 1,490 metres (4,888 ft). Upon its completion in 2005 it became the fourth longest suspension bridge span in the world and the largest in China. With the opening of the Xihoumen Bridge in 2007, it became the second longest span in China, and the fourth longest in the world. The towers are 215 metres (705 ft) above water level. The two approach spans are not suspended. The main span of the bridge consists of a streamlined orthotropic steel box girder that is 3 metres (10 ft) in depth. The width of the deck is 39.2 metres (129 ft), accommodating 6 traffic lanes and a narrow walkway at each outside edge for maintenance. The height clearance for river navigation is about 50 metres (164 ft).

The north bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 406 metres (1,332 ft) with towers 150 metres (492 ft) above water level. In between the two bridges is the island of Siyezhou. The total length of the bridge complex is about 35.66 kilometres (22.16 mi)[1]. Construction of the bridge complex began in October 2000 and was completed ahead of schedule. The bridge cost 5.8 billion Yuan (about US$ 700 million). The complex opened to traffic on April 30, 2005.

link between the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen across the Great

Belt. It consists of a road suspension bridge and railway tunnel

between Zealand and the island Sprogø, as well as a box girder bridge

between Sprogø and Funen. The “Great Belt Bridge” (Danish:

Storebæltsbroen) commonly refers to the suspension bridge, although it

may also be used to mean the beam bridge or the link in its entirety.

The suspension bridge, known as the East Bridge, has the world’s third

longest main span (1.6 km). It is designed by the Danish architectural

practice Dissing+Weitling.

The link replaces the ferry service which had been the primary means of

crossing Great Belt for more than 100 years. After more than five

decades of speculation and debate, the decision to construct the link

was made in 1986; while it was originally intended to complete the

railway link three years before opening the road connection, the link

was opened to rail traffic in 1997 and road traffic in 1998. At an

estimated cost of DKK 21.4 billion (1988 prices), the link is the

largest construction project in Danish history.

Its operation and maintenance are performed by A/S Storebælt under Sund

& Bælt. Its construction and maintenance are financed by tolls on

vehicles and trains.

The link has reduced travel times significantly; previously taking

about an hour by ferry, the Great Belt can now be crossed in about 10

minutes. The construction of the Great Belt Fixed Link and the Øresund

Bridge have, together, enabled one to drive from Mainland Europe to

Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia through Denmark, greatly shortening

the alternative land route through Finland.

It is a suspension bridge, built on the Zhoushan Archipelago, the largest offshore island group in China. The main span was completed in December 2007. The entire bridge, along with Jintang Bridge, was opened to traffic on a test basis on 25 December 2009. It is the second-longest suspension bridge ranked by the length of the center span. The opening date was put off because of a ship collision on 16 November 2009 that slightly damaged the side of Jintang Bridge.

The bridge is 5.3-kilometer long. It has a 2.6-kilometer-long main bridge with a central span of 1,650 meters. The approaches total 2.7 kilometers. When it opened, there was only one bridge with a larger span, the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. However, there are several other bridges planned or under construction that will also be larger.

The bridge was built by the province of Zhejiang, at a cost of 2.48 billion yuan (approximately US$363 million). Construction began in 2005, and the first traffic crossed the bridge on 25 December 2009, at 11:58 p.m., local time.

The Xihoumen Bridge links Jintang and Cezi islands. Another bridge, the 27-kilometer-long cable-stayed Jintang Bridge, links Jintang Island and Zhenhai of Ningbo. The two bridges are the second phase of a huge project started in 1999 to link the Zhoushan Archipelago to the mainland with five bridges. Construction of the other three bridges has been completed.

It is the first and only tilting bridge in the world. It’s hydraulic rams at each end of the bridge allow it to tilt which ultimately allows small ships to pass through. The innovative technology of this brige to tilt let won its designers the prestigious Stirling Prize of $44 million for architecture in 2002. 19,000 tonnes of concrete and enough steel has been poured into 98ft deep foundations to make it comfortable enough for heavy transport to pass without any fear. The bridge can withstand a collision with a 4,000 tonne ship moving at 4 knots. This bridge is sometimes referred to as the ‘Blinking Eye Bridge’ or the ‘Winking Eye Bridge’ due to its shape and its tilting method.

Windsor Castle is in Berkshire, England. It is the largest inhabited castle in the world and together with Buckingham Palace in London and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh – it is one of the official residences of England’s Queen. It is Originally made of wood. However, the Castle was later rebuilt in stone, and grew in importance over the years. Henry II constructed the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall.

The Castle have been providing a home and fortress for royalty for over 900 years and was built for William the Conqueror to guard the approach to London. King Edward III in 1350, initiated a 24-year rebuilding program by demolishing the existing castle, with the exception of the Curfew Tower (”T”) and some other minor outworks. Afterward, throughout its 900-year history, the design of Windsor Castle has changed and evolved according to the times, tastes, requirements and finances of successive Monarchs.

Windsor Castle is also a busy visitor attraction. The site sits above the River Thames, on the edge of a Saxon hunting ground and one day’s march from the Tower of London. Many parts of the Castle are open to the public, including the precincts, the State Apartments, Queen Mary’s famous dolls’ house, St George’s Chapel, and the Albert Memorial Chapel.
